Usually try and go in for a small race so that the time taken for the pool tournament to complete is not that long and people do not need to stay in the hall once the tournament is over and done with. The negative side of this is that if you keep the race very small – it gets easy for other people to luck into a game. Races are usually kept to a minimum of 3 which is usually considered to be an apt number for the game.
You also need to consider the timing. Starting at about 7 pm on a weeknight ensures that you get the people you need to come and play after work. This timing also gives you plenty of time to set up your hall for the players. On a weekend you can start the Pool Tournaments in the late evening and Sundays can be earlier at about 1 pm so that players get to end the game in time and get some rest before the next week starts.

Yes, of course there is a professional circuit where famous pool and snooker players compete in Pool Tournaments around the world, but there is most probably an event that you can join fairly local to yourself.
I remember watch Steve Davis, a famous and multiple Snooker World Champion competing in a number of Pool Tournaments on satellite TV. This really gave me an urge to play pool. So I called up my friend, and together we went down to the local bar for a few games of pool. It was early on a thursday evening so we did not expect to see many people there – but we were wrong!
As we walked into the bar we saw lots of people – although this is not unusual for a thursday night as we live in a large city, and for many city workers Thursday night is a night they go out and socialize with their work colleagues. But this was a Thursday evening at 5pm, everyone should have still been at work.
We had accidently stumbled across a pool league. I spoke to one of the people watching and they said that there was a number of pool tournaments in the area that formed into a league. There was a litlle prize money, and there was a small cost to enter, but that was ok for us.
So although we didn’t have the pool tables to ourself, we had discover somewhere we could compete across others in pool matches.
